I'm pretty sure it's just shoddy coloring and lax editorial. It comes and goes, and in Identity Crisis, some idiot seemed to think that "grew up in a monastery" meant tonsure (that weird "monk haircut" with the ring of hair and baldness on top) as well as being white.
I've also seen Anita Fite colored generic-peach, too. I wrote up a whole rant about it a while back... Something to the effect of "no wonder characters like Black Lightning feel the need to put racial descriptors in their names".
Really, it's the most insidious kind of prejudice...the assumption that *everyone* looks like you.
I'd e nearly happy if that was it -- if it was the colourist being lazy or not looking up anything about characters and just going with bleaching them. It's still horrible, but a bit LESS so than if they consciously decided that they didn't like so-and-so with dark skin. The artists are also to blame when they don't draw the facial traits the way they're supposed to, the editors are to blame if they let it pass...
I just feel there are TOO MANY people to go through for it to really be an accident or laziness, sometimes.
This is when I start being bitter every time I see characters being drawn as generic Caucasians when they're not :/
I would have *assumed* they had a book full of character sheets for each artist and colorist, but either they don't or some people ignore/misplace theirs. Seriously, DC's got a lot of folks in it and nobody can be expected to know *all* of them, but one page each with a full color, full body pic and a couple of headshots, along with a few salient notes...that ought to be easy, right? Obviously the flagships would get a couple of pages - the Bats, Superman, the JLA, the Titans nee YJ... Say two or three pages each on those.
Little notes. Earing on the right or left? Right or left handed? This character ought to have little bit darker skin, this one's pale, this one WAS NICKNAMED TIGER WOODS BY THE KIDS AT HIS DAD'S YOUTH CENTER AND NOT BECAUSE OF HIS GOLF GAME. *cough*. Ahem.
