Home again, and a ficlet
Mar. 13th, 2010 07:58 pmAnyway, home for now. There's not much I can do. I wanted to stay at least one more day, but I wasn't driving. Mom is home too and will go back up on Tuesday - I have two aunts, two uncles, and a cousin on duty, and three tiny cousins (her great grandchildren) on cheer up rotation. We're really really hoping that once the drugs we think are making her depressed are out of her system she will recover. In addition to that, she's got fluid build-up *everywhere*, especially her legs and heart, and an infection in one lung.
Probably this is all TMI, I don't know. I just didn't feel like repeating myself in chat a bunch, and now I can point people here. ^_^;
I distracted myself this morning by writing. Here is the result:
“What the heck *is* that?”
Tim looked down at the palm-sized device he was using to track their quarry, slightly surprised. Kon didn't usually show a lot of interest in Bat-gadgets unless they exploded or electrocuted anyone who touched them (both for their coolness factor and out of a sense of self-preservation). This one was fairly unassuming - just a simple black box with a screen, though the additions he'd made last week didn't all fit inside the housing, so there were blue and yellow wires protruding from one side. “I haven't named it, or anything. It's a biometric tracker.”
Kon blanked his face. “A biowhosy?”
Tim turned from where he'd been crouched, overlooking the warehouse district. “Biometric. Body signature, Kon," he explained, a slight smile on his lips. “When I caught up with Smythe last night I took a full scan of his heartbeat, body heat, voice patterns and brainwave activity so that I'd be able to identify him at a distance tonight. I borrowed the concept after seeing how easily you could pinpoint someone with your hearing.”
Kon blinked. “Okay, heartbeat, voice patterns, I understand. Body heat - I guess that's...”
“Infrared.”
“Right. Um. How the hell do you read somebody's brainwaves from a hundred feet up, through a roof, a ceiling, and-” he squinted “a baseball cap?”
“I modified one of our laser-based listening devices and paired it with a focused electromagnetic wave generator that I'm using as a kind of sonar. The waves bounce off...” He broke off. Kon was just sitting next to him, watching his animated gestures with a sort of soppy smile. “What?”
Kon just grinned and wrapped and arm around his shoulder, pulling him into a loose hug and a quick, scorching kiss. “I love it when you talk nerdy to me.”
