i deliberately concieved his character as a foil for Tim. Initially, I was writing him very much *as* Tim - albeit a more honest version of a Tim who hasn't been around for a long while. It took me a while to build a more distinct character under that. I hink that's why people seem to like him okay, though, even if I don't think most readers have caught the parallels.
