Several (several!) years ago, I read an interview with Will Wright, the creator of Sim City, the Sims, and about a thousand other Sim franchise games (about 80%-90% of which I own), in which he said, more or less "I'd really like to do a game about evolution. You know, like...Sim Life, or something." Nothing more was said on the subject for a long time, but I hoped, because I knew (or thought I knew) how awesome such a game would be.  Then, a few years ago, the rumors broke about Sim Everything, which sounded like an expansion on that idea, and I got excited. Then came the demo Will sprung on the folks at the 2005 GDC as part of a talk about procedural animation. And I just about wet my pants. If you don't want to watch the 35 minute (short version) video of the original Spore demo, which I really recommend, you can get the very, very short version from this ad.

So, I (and brother) have been anxiously devouring any and all news about the game's development for three years now. The game doesn't come out until September, but the creature editor was released today, and I've been playing with it for a few hours now.

Meet my first 4 twisted creations:

The dragon I built just to see if I could make something recognizable with the editor. The green bipedal guy spews poison from glands on it's chest, the orange guy is just adorable, and the guy with the grass is my absolute favorite. I've had something rather like him in mind since the first demo. Here's a better, closeup image of what he's hiding behind all that camo:

He's a lovely little nightmare, isn't he? Imagine stepping on that in the dark!
