Some DH musings on family planning
Aug. 2nd, 2007 01:46 pmI'm taking a moment out of my lunch break to be a fangirl. This is HP stuff, having to do with DH. And family planning.
This is having to do with the moment I very literally hit myself in the face with the book and squawked "HARRY'S A DADDY." Not during the epilogue. At the moment Harry saw Lupin and Tonk's bodies. He's Teddy's godfather, right?
So, did Harry raise Teddy? He is referred to as "our" Teddy in the epilogue, which seems to indicate yes. However, that is paired with the idea that if Teddy marries a (I assume Bill and Fleur's) Weasley, he'll be real family (this made me cringe a bit, despite the lack of blood relation, as did the trio's theory in HBP that Tonks was pining for Sirius. Those were the only British bits that gave American me pause - the casual attitude to cousincest).
One could argue that Harry might not have been a fit parent at 17 (almost 18), but lots of people raise kids at that age. Andromeda presumably would have had a hand in, and I doubt Molly would have let Harry raise a kid, his or anyone else's, without dropping in at least once a week with covered dishes and baby books. Maybe Andromeda would have raised the child herself, with help from Harry, or maybe vice versa. I don't know that she'd be up to parenting, though, having just lost her husband and her only child in such rapid succession.
It's hard to be sure of anything without knowing the ages of the oldest child, but I don't think Harry and Ginny got hitched as soon as she finished school. Harry probably would not have tried to finish his education, what with being independently wealthy and being at least partially responsible for an infant. Ginny, being younger, almost certainly would go back to Hogwarts. There was probably a period where they had to get to know each other all over again, then the serious dating, then the engagement, and finally the early part of marriage where one adjusts to married life. Then they started having kids.
Thinking about all this has also got me remembering something I thought of early in the book. Do you think Lupin and Tonks had a bit of a shotgun wedding? The Lexicon doesn't have a calendar up yet, and I don't have my book in front of me, but there seemed to be an awfully short period between the wedding and the birth. That might explain why Lupin was so panicky and unhappy with the marriage, at first. I am gawdawfully amused by the idea of Remus Lupin being sexually irresponsible.
On a final note, I just want to say, the fangirl in me lights up, for some reason, at the idea of single-parent-dad Harry bouncing little metamorphing Teddy around the now clean Grimmauld Place while Kreacher is testing the temperature of formula. I want to see a fic where Harry brings Teddy to Grimmauld and introduces him to Kreacher as his godson, and a Black. I adore the idea that Harry will leave Grimmauld to Teddy, someday, the way Sirius left it to him (He's got a Potter fortune for the others, after all). Babies and Squee. ^__^
