My last post was The Tim Show. This is The Dick Show. Probably, if you aren't a comic book fan, this will mean nothing and not be interesting,
Have now read War Games vols 2 & 3, still can't find the first. Also, I've now read Infinite Crisis, and saw the look on Tim's face when he saw that Kon was dead. *wibbles* And...They almost killed Dick, in IC. There's an interview in the back with Jimenez and the others, and they almost picked Dick! I'd heard a rumor. There was good Dick discussion from the point of view of the writers - and (in the book) Batman, about how Dick is sort of the common thread of the DCU - everyone is friends with Dick. And (in one of the most surreally slashy discussions ever):
Superman (Earth II): JOIN ME AND WE WILL MAKE A PERFECT WORLD TOGETHER!
(Our) Bruce: No.
Superman (Earth II): Everything in this world is only a corrupted version of what it is in mine!
(Our) Bruce: What about Dick Grayson? Is this world's Dick Grayson a corrupt image of your own.
Superman (Earth II): ...no. wibble.
Dick was nowhere near at the time. Had not been mentioned in the conversation. Bruce asked about Dick, not Lois. WTF? But, I flailed a little (discretely. Or probably not) in the bookstore, at the OMG CLARK/DICK moment.
I read a lot of Titans (III) today and yesterday. My absolute favorite arc, so far, was the fight against Dr. Light - who, it was revealed in Identity Crisis, was mindwiped (psychically lobotomized) by certain members of the JLA (they did BATMAN, too, when he found out, which is so fucked up) after he raped Sue Dibney. Light gets his hands on Green Arrow (who was one of the conspirators) and holds him hostage for the Titans. He's got his full power and his memories back, and he basically says: "You lobotomized me and made me a joke for your children to play with, and now I'm going to fuck them up." There's a little forshadowing, early in the arc, in the locker rooms at the Titan Tower, where the number of lockers is commented on. Because, you know, once a Titan, always a Titan. But turning the page to the spread and seeing every living Titan in formation, with Dick at the lead, was just...And he shouted "TITANS TOGETHER!" which is so cheezy but I was laughing and almost crying, because Titans is my team, and Dick was back and...
Because Dick had left. He couldn't stand being hurt anymore when people he cared about died and he was off trying to be Batman, trying to not care about anyone, to just do the work and not feel for any one, and it was breaking my heart. But he came back! And he said "Titans together!" and...I need a moment.
There were some grand moments in IC. The Clark/Dick was good, but the best line happened when Booster Gold brought the new Blue Beetle (*cries for Ted*) up to the JLA, and Batman says: "Booster, you have no idea how to talk to kids." Then procedes to gently pep-talk the new Beetle out of semi-hysterics. *cracks up*
