What I'm watching (and reading)
Sep. 24th, 2008 03:26 pmI recently watched the Loveless series over at P&M’s (P made himself scarce for the duration), and, despite initial misgivings about the channishness, I’ve decided I quite like it. Enough to read the manga through the current volume and decide I really like that. The anime is a good adaptation, but there’s just so much more to the manga.
And now I’m watching Death Note. I watched part of an episode on tv ages ago, and thought I might give it a try in the Japanese. Wow, am I ever glad I did. It’s complicated, convoluted and clever, and it makes me talk to myself when I watch it (which drives my family crazy, as I’ve been watching it at the computer in the kitchen with headphones on). I’m about halfway into the series, so nobody spoil it for me, because at this point I’m not quite sure where crazy, crazy (like a fox) Light is going with things. Also, L kind of creeps me out and amuses me at the same time, and I can’t help but laugh every time they zoom in on his face.
I got my (veddy nice) bootleg Death Note from www.boxtorrents.com, which is wonderful. I’m sort of out of touch with the fansub/scanslation community at the moment, so I don’t know how widely the community is known. I thought I’d mention it in case anyone hadn’t already heard of them. They’ve got all sorts of great, older shonen-ai and yaoi videos I’ve been hunting for a long time (Fish in the Trap, etc) and I am now the proud owner of a very poor quality copy of Lesson XX (which is far more than I’ve been able to find up until this point, let me tell you). And the downloads are fast fast. You have to register (free), but it’s worth it.
Watching Death Note, with its pretty, pretty animation and interesting style, has made me want to make AMVs (a logistical impossibility for the time being, unfortunately). But, I couldn’t think of any songs that would make good Death Note videos. Then, on the radio today, I heard “Shut up and Let Me Go!” by the Ting Tings, and now I have the world’s goofiest Deathnote video living in my head.
