I'm maybe 10 pages or so into the Mystery Potion Thing, which is further than I've gotten on anything in a while. What makes this super dorky is me pulling things out of Elements of Murder about the history of alchemy and poisoning, adding research, hitting them with the slash hammer, and then inserting them into my story. For example: There is a book called The Triumphal Chariot of Antimony that was supposedly written by a Benedictine monk named Basilus Valentinus from a monastery in Erfurt, born in 1395. It was also supposedly discovered inside a marble pillar at that monastery (which didn't exist, btw) when it was hit by lightning. There are 3 schools of thought on Basil - that he was a real guy, that he was Paracelsus under a pseudonym (they would have been contemporary, and their methods and philosophies were similar), and that he was entirely made up by Johann Thölde, who published the book in the 1600s and who had previously written Haliographia, which included methods for the extraction of metals from salts which are also mentioned in The Triumphal Chariot. The latter is most likely, as reference is also made in Chariot of the use of antimony in the manufacture of lead type and for treatment of syphillis, both of which would have been severely anachronistic to its supposed date of authorship.

Only, in my head, this has translated to the romance and partnership of Basil and Paracelsus, and the later extreme cross-gen love affair/mentorship between Basil and Thölde (Thölde was a pharmacist and the owner of a large stake in a silver mine - which would have been one of the better available sources of Antimony in Germany circa 1670). I would like all of this to somehow make it's way into my Mystery Potion Thing, which will probably get a title lifted from Chariot now that I have found a transcription online. Maybe with the Valentinus/Thölde I can make subtle allusions to Snapledore?

OMG I am a dork.

On a side note, before I run off to class, I recently found a short and reasonably coherent Orphen fanfic I had written some time ago (In which Majic crushes on his master and nearly gets himself killed by a horrible lake monster because of it, only to be rescued from a very embarrassing situation by said master). If anyone is interested, I will put it up - however, I don't think I've ever heard anyone on my flist mention being an Orphen fan, so I won't spam if nobody wants it. I would also like to state for the record that Orphen is one of the Great Neglected Potential Slash Fandoms of the World.

Oh oh oh! I wanna read it! I like Orphen and Majic. Been forever since I've read a fic with them! Orphen and GTO are like my secret loves, where I wish there was more fic. Yes indeedy.

Orphen makes me so happy. Sooo much potential for good things, of the Orphen/Majic, Orphen/Hartia, Childman/Orphen, Steph/Orphen, Steph/Majic, Steph/flowerboy whose name I forget, and the general wonderful fuckedupedness of Azalie/Childman bodyswap and genderfuck. Also, Majic is totally the cutest blondest (sekritly badass) uke since Quatre (up there with Ryo from Generator Gawl, which also deserves far more fanfic).

Since I have finally found another Orphen fan, I must ask your opinion on a very important matter: Cleao or Cleo? (or even Kurio, but that reeks of Katoru and Torowa silliness to me). Also, do you think Azalie was supposed to be Azalea, and got lost in traslation?

Hmmm. Definitely Cleao I think. Not sure about Azalie. That's an interesting take. Not sure. It's been so long since I watched Orphen. I never watched the entire series... just the ending and some of the first shows. I think you may be right though.

Generatoro Gawl certainly needs more fanfic of the Gawl/Ryo kind. I'm pissed because someone borrowed my GG and never returned it. I have to buy the dang series again.

GG has such a great mindfuck ending. I love time travel stories! Paradox is a thing of beauty.

Most of my favorites have mindfuckery, or at least some kind of semi-dark craziness. I just rewatched a chunk of X with a friend (eps 15-19, if that means anything to you) with all the best angst and side switching.

Hmm...Other fandoms that need more stuff... Well, LessonXX of course, and Kaze to Ki no Uta. And Petshop! But I already know you agree with me on that one! And XXXholic, which I don't know if you read, but it's not done yet. And Please Save My Earth, because I can't find ANY Tamura-san/Haru

I've only seen one episode of Death Note so far, but it looks pleasantly fucked up. I'm waiting for abovementioned friend to buy the set, though, so that I can start from the begining.

I have to say, I have quite the soft spot for the twisty plot or a good mindfuck. ^__^ That's why PSOH can be so darn fun.

I should watch Death Note. I think I got it confused with another anime that I really hated (it was clamp) and therefore never gave it a chance. You definitely have watched a lot more anime than I have. I tend to stick to just a few here and there.

I often watch other people's anime, and thus only get to see it once. This was, unfortunately, the case with Orphen (which was one of those where the friend said "here, lets watch the first episode of this" and after the first episode, I was all like "OMG GIMMEE!" - Trigun was another like that, from the same guy).

I watched an itty bit of Orphen:Revenge and did not like it AT ALL. It's...silly. No angst or fuckedness! Pure fluff!

I remember we were at Con, talking all night and bein' generally snuggly and you told me a little about what you had seen of Revenge. Too bad it didn't really ever go anywhere. I think I watched one episode of Revenge, just to watch Majic.

That's right! I remember now we did talk about it. *smacks self* I think in my memory, the snuggling itself took precidence...

Also, what was the CLAMP anime you hated?

I generally hate all Clamp. I can't remember exactly which anime I didn't like that time. It's one where the characters arms and legs are way too long. That's about all I retained.

That...does not narrow it down much. *smirk*

I ♥ CLAMP, truely, but they do tend to the gangly with their boys, don't they?

I wouldn't mind reading it either. I haven't seen Orphen for a good while, but I'm sure I'll remember as I read. ^^

And I miss Generator Gawl as well... and from the few eps of Deathnote that I've seen...it looks rather messed all to hell, but awesomely so. OH! and before I forget Logo (the gay channel on my cable) was showing Fake episodes on a late night show of theirs.^^ I was squeeing like hell when I saw it, dubbed or not. ^^

My new obsession is One Piece. It rocks my everlovin' socks!

I tried to get into One Piece (via manga) some time ago because, hello, Jessie + Pirates-not-of-the-Caribbean = ♥, but I just couldn't. Didn't care for it at all. This is a damned shame, because of my vast, vast love of piratey songs and other things. I can't get into Horatio Hornblower or Pirates of the Caribbean fandom either. I hate it! I have failled in all my attempts to find a fandom where my ability to sing The Derelict and other gruesom shanties while drunk off my ass on rum would be a valued skill. *le sigh* (You have at least heard my repetoire... Riggadiggajigg shag all!)

Ahhh yes. I almost forgot about our poor Riley. ^^
Awwww. You know you can make your own! it's much more fun.

*gasp* Forgot about One Balled Riley?!

I taught The Old Dunn Cow to someone at work, the other day. Or, at least, she learned when to bang on the table and when to shout "MACINTYRE!". That's one of my favorites, right now. I can't find the cd with my favorite version of "The Sailors Prayer," though! Or "The Mary Ellen Carter!" And I need "The Mary Ellen Carter!" It's my get-crap-done song!

*laughs* I said almost!!! hehe And I use The Old Dunn Cow when I'm drinking. Makes me sing better. ^_~

And I think when we copied the cds for me, One Balled didn't carry over. Which cd was it on again?

It's at the end of The Blue One, after several minutes of silence and a warning that anyone of decent taste should turn off the cd player.

Ahhhh. That's why ^^ I didn't copy the blue one for myself. That's why i don't have it! I was worried.
