Why oh why do I click on these things?!
Feb. 14th, 2008 11:32 pmI seem to be developing a problem. At first, it wasn't a problem. At first, it was a good thing. It started out this way: "I will make an effort to be open minded and read pairings I wouldn't normally like if they are by an author I like or recced by a fellow fan whose taste I trust." This was not only acceptable, but, I thought, rather a good thing, and resulted in me reading a lot of really great stuff I would otherwise have skipped for pairing reasons.
Then, it became this: "I will read things (favorite author/reccer rules applying) that might possibly be outside my comfort zone, because there is always a back button." Also "There are things I find acceptable in Harry Potter fandom that would not be acceptable somewhere else, because of magic and/or the imagining of a completely different culture." (this, in particular, applies to grey areas like what animagi get up to in the bedroom, and issues of consent prompted by magical compulsion, etc).
What it has become now: I just read a story in which Lupin steals Snape's body from his grave and reanimates it (not "brings him back to life" - turns him into a zombie). I was not familiar with the author at all, and only vaguely know of the reccer. Again, there's a magical grey area here, because can you call it necrophilia when the corpse is walking and talking? I read the whole thing, enjoyed parts, was repulsed by parts, and, once I'd finished it, sat in my chair staring at the screen and saying, out loud, "Oh my god. Did I just read that? Why did I just read that? I can't believe I read that. I can't believe I read that and it was actually good!" And then I had to ponder my levels of perversion for a while. Please don't get my wrong - I'm not saying I thought the story was smokin hot and sexy - it was funny and interesting, and also sort of trainwreck captivating. Still, I just read a story involving sex and a (partly) dead person.
I feel all weird, now. On the other hand,

On an unrelated note, I am considering calling the Mystery Potion Thing Fishes Die Not of Cold.
