As a bisexual (leaning toward lesbian) woman...I'm actually way more comfortable writing gay characters than straight ones, lol. I had a weird moment during the scene with the football team where I realized that was the first time I'd written interaction between "normal" straight boys, and it made me all nervous about their characterization.
A lot of the stuff related to the club is semi-autobiographical (though my hometown didn't have a murder, we started fighting for our club just after Matthew Shepard was killed - and I didn't consciously name my victim after him, but once I made the connection, I realized I ought to keep it.)
